More than 1 million of people have poured into the streets of Hong Kong at the beginning of June 2019, exclaiming »Withdraw the bill«, »Release arrested students« and »Step down, Carrie Lam«. The future of human rights and freedom are the motivation behind demonstrations in Hong Kong that operates as the semi-autonomous region. After Britain returned Hong Kong to China in 1997, Hong Kong operated as »one country, two systems«, meaning that Hong Kong would govern itself for 50 years before fully falling under China’s control in 2047. Well, that’s on paper. In recent years, the Hong Kong government has disqualified elected lawmakers, jailed pro-democracy leaders, and looked the other way when China kidnapped people in Hong Kong.
And while the Hong Kong government discussed amendments to extradition law, over 1 million people demonstrate against it. The issue is that the amendments would give the Chief Executive the legal right to extradite a suspected criminal to a country that Hong Kong has no extradition agreement with and that would give city’s leading authority, especially as the Chief Executive isn’t an elected leader, but is chosen by a committee appointed by China. This means that everyone in Hong Kong is at risk of facing trial in China. The bill will allow China to target people who it views as ‘criminals’. If this law goes through Hong Kong will lose human rights and freedom, but China would lose so much more because Hong Kong represents the essence of what China could become.
