Vrhunski umetnik Sergei Polunin

Given then, that today is Valentine’s Day, it’s a perfect time for sharing a story about the great artist, Sergei Polunin, extraordinary dancer, that I have a huge crush on. And when you catch yourself searching information on the web about his height, then you know that crush has moved on a different level and become something like an obsession.

Groza vseh groz.

A video, which is famous even outside the world of ballet circulated around two years ago, and I was fascinated by his dancing. And purely by coincidence, a few days ago I have seen the documentary film called Dancer, where the story about Sergei Polunin was presented and also the background of this video.
It is the story of a boy from Ukraine, whose mom saw ballet as an option for better life and escape from poverty. His whole family supported the boy’s talent in dance, so in order for him to achieve it, they moved to different parts of the world in order to find work and money. The first big opportunity came when applying in Royal Ballet in London, where among thousands of children only a few was selected and among them was Sergei. In the documentary was also clips from Sergei old camera, video footage where you can see glimpses of that sweet boy’s life and I was particularly fascinated with one sequence where children were standing in line and at the same time were doing pirouettes, and one by one were quitting, except Sergei, he was rotating until reaching the end of the training room. I can only imagine how hard must be for any child to grow up without family, but to believe that through dance he will bring a family together must be really big pressure and also powerful motivation. And so it was, he worked twice as much and as a result, he skipped forward and so he become the youngest principal dancer in the history of the English Royal Ballet.
Performances in which he performed were sold out two years in advance. And when his career opened, the family broke up, the parents got divorced, so motivation and purpose were lost. In searching for help, he turned to ballet school and luckily for him, he quite quickly realized interests of the institution. When his rebellion side awakens, drugs appeared and also tattoos, and when he declared that he is leaving Royale Ballet of London, media took that and turn into sensation story where they declare him as ”bad boy” and similar nonsense.

I reviewed almost all possible interviews and I got an impression that he is very honest and truthful person, and in fact, he didn’t hide that in some performances he was under the influence of cocaine, where he had more enjoyable dance than usual because he didn’t felt pain. Of course, this information was preserved from media as irrefutable evidence of his ” bad ” character. Honestly, I wonder what would results be if there was a kind of doping test for drugs and alcohol in the world of drama, opera and ballet; or worse among politicians in parliament.
And although am not from the world of ballet it looks likes that in that world the worse crime that cocaine is having a tattoo. The horror of horrors. So, his story in England ended and his desire to continue a career in the US was closed, due to reputation and damage created by media where he became a ballet version of Lindsay Lohan.

The path led him to Moscow and beginning from the scratch, where he got help from only one person who saw outside the box. Here, too, he comes to the same point about purpose and meaning of dance. He decided to end his dance career and this video is sort of goodbye from dance. After knowing this, the whole video got a different meaning. It wasn’t only beautiful dance, fulfilled with emotions, frustrations, and a story that life has brought him, it’s the point of transformation from dancer to an artist. During 9 hours of shooting the video, he explained how he was going through emotions and crying, and then a state of emptiness came with clarity. Ironically, the dance that was supposed to be farewell dance, revived his passion and brought back his purpose. And also seeing children dancing on his video must be a big motivation to continue the paths of dance, that was chosen for him. After that, he was dancing for three months for free revitalizing his passion. And now he is dancing worldwide, fascinating audience and inspire so many people, as a solo dancer, principal dancer and as a pair of beautiful Natalia Osipova. His story reminds me of the power of transformation where from the cocoon with so much effort and straight beautiful butterfly develops, and that is how I see him, as a sensitive person who was able to transform himself from being a dancer into the great artist who expresses through dance.

P.S. He is 180 cm tall :D
