NeanderthalFlute

Neanderthal flute – the oldest instrument in the world

That Slovenia is a truly special place speaks also information that in this piece of Eden was discovered the oldest instrument in the world. In 1995 in the archaeological site Divje babe near Cerkno were discovered the Neanderthal flute, the oldest in the world. The flute is made from the bone of cave bear and is estimated to be from 50,000 to 60,000 years old, and is at least 15.000 years older than other known Paleolithic flute,  which is attributed to anatomically modern humans. That finding changed how we see the behavior of Neanderthals and their mental abilities. So, this is not only the oldest flute in the world, but it’s also the only one, and you can visit this unique instrument at the National Museum of Slovenia in Ljubljana.

Ljuben Dimkaroski, Macedonian-Slovenian trumpeter, teacher, conductor and a versatile artist has given  life to this instrument and made Paleolithic flute know as an instrumented worldwide. This August when visiting his hometown in Macedonia, he died of cancer at age 63. But the flute carried his name and music he played. Flute, found by the head of archaeological excavations Ivan Turk, was given name »tidldibab« after the initials of those who has given meaning to this instrument, so besides Ivan Turk, there are also initials of academic musician Ljuben Dimkaroski and the name of the cave Divje babe.

(Once I have) endeared (the deity), she will love me in her heart,
the offer I bring may wholly cover my sin,
bringing sesame oil may work on my behalf in awe may I …
The sterile may they make fertile.
Grain may they bring forth.
She, the wife, will bear (children) to the father.
May she who has not yet borne children bear them.

moonhymn1

The Oldest Known Melody is from 1400BC and is know as the »Hurrian Hymn«, which was discovered in the 1950s at Ugarit, Syria. There were 29 tablets unearthed during the mission, but only one text (text H6), was in a sufficient state of preservation to allow for modern academic musical reconstruction. It was preserved for some thirty-four hundred years on a clay tablet and is written in the Cunieform text of the ancient Hurrian language. The song is a cult hymn, also known as the Hurrian hymn to Nikkal, wife of the moon god. A religious text concerning offerings to the goddess  is at the top part of the tablet contained the words and the bottom half was instructions for playing the lyre. For now, at least, the exact lyrical content of the Hurrian Hymn remains partly concealed, although a translation undertaken by Hans-Jochen Thiel in 1977 is considered closest to the original’s spirit. How melody sound on ancient Lyra was brought to light by very talented Michael Levy on the ancient Lyre.

Ne glede koliko časa preteče, še vedno melodija zveni enako mistično in čutno. Resnično velika je moč glasbe.

No matter how much time has passed, the melody still sounds mystical and sensual. Truly great is the power of music.
